The “sacchetto” construction method is a technique that allows for the creation of particularly comfortable footwear. This manufacturing process, following the standards of the most authentic Italian shoemaking tradition, involves up to two hundred steps that require great skill, experience, and expertise. Sacchetto refers to ‘small bag,’ so it feels like a slipper yet appears like a shoe that may be worn outside the house.

During the stitching phase, the full-grain nappa leather lining is attached like a “bag” along the edge, enabling the construction of a shoe without the rigid components used in most shoes. Stitching on shoes with the Sacchetto Construction allows us to remove all of those inflexible features and make soft slipper-like shoes that look just as nice as your favorite shoe.

Once the upper, lining, and insole are stitched together, the shoe is pulled over a shoe last, which is a form in the shape of a foot. The shoe is carefully stretched and secured onto the last to maintain its shape during the final stages of production. The shoe is then subjected to a heating process that helps it maintain its form.

The shoe becomes lighter and allows the foot to move naturally. A breathable padded material is inserted between the sole and the lining to provide long-lasting shock absorption throughout the foot. The outsole, typically made of rubber or leather, is securely attached to the bottom of the shoe using adhesive or stitching, providing traction and durability. The flexible construction allows for the incorporation of heels, requiring the inclusion of the insole and heel.

What Is the Sensation of the Sacchetto?

The feel of shoes with Sacchetto construction is often described as lightweight and supple. The absence of additional layers between the upper and the insole allows for a greater flexibility and natural movement of the foot. The shoes tend to have a glove-like fit, as they conform closely to the shape of the foot, providing a more intimate and personalized feel.

The successful execution of the sacchetto technique is made possible by the blend of modernity and tradition, where technique and experience come together to create a product that delights the foot.
